Have you ever wondered why your competitors' webpage titles always instantly grab attention? The secret often lies in the <title>
tag. This article will provide a step-by-step demonstration on how to control the number of characters based on pixel width, place core keywords in the most prominent position, and leverage emotional vocabulary and year numbers to amplify click desire.
Combining with practical case studies, you will learn to transform theory into directly reusable templates, ensuring every title modification genuinely boosts traffic and conversions.
Why Are Title Tags Important?
The title tag refers to the <title>
tag. It is one of Google's explicitly stated ranking factors and the most important part of Google SEO page optimization.
The content inside the <title>
tag is the web page title, sometimes referred to as the SEO title, SEO page title, or meta title. You just need to know that they all refer to the same thing.
The purpose of this tag is to let search engines know what title you have set for your web page. In terms of visual presentation on the web page, it looks like this:

The Impact of Title Tags
Title Tags Affect SEO Rankings
Semantic search engines like Google understand what your webpage is about through the content within the title tag. Inconsistent title and body content will directly impact ranking results. Therefore, it is crucial to ensure that your SEO title and webpage content are consistent; otherwise, it will be difficult to achieve good rankings in relevant searches.
Title Tags Influence User Click-Through Rate
In search engines, the content within the <title>
tag directly appears in search results. A well-crafted <title>
tag can significantly increase the click-through rate (CTR), thereby influencing the traffic your website receives.
Title Tags Determine Browser Tab Content
Title tags instruct the browser on how to display your page title. Correctly utilizing title tags helps users accurately switch between multiple open browser tabs, improving navigation and user experience.
How to Write High CTR Titles?
Title Length and Pixel Width
Google measures titles in SERP (Search Engine Results Page) by fixed pixel width, not character count. Character count is a more easily measurable standard for humans, as we can't visually gauge pixel width. The appropriate title widths in Google search results are as follows:
Desktop Recommendation
On desktop, it's theoretically 600 pixels, but to avoid truncation or rewriting, it's recommended to keep the title length within 580 px. This corresponds to approximately 55-60 English characters.
Mobile Recommendation
On mobile, the display width is slightly narrower, so it's recommended to keep the title length within 530-550 pixels. This corresponds to 50-55 English characters.
Important: If a title exceeds 60 English characters, Google might truncate it in the search results. Conversely, if the title is too short, it will be difficult to adequately describe what the page is about.
1. Avoid All-Caps Titles
In English, uppercase letters (such as 'W' and 'M') are wider. If an entire title uses all caps, it is more likely to exceed pixel limits and be truncated, and readability is poor, so it is not recommended.
2. Website Name and Brand Name Can Be Omitted from the Title
If you need to include a lot of content and keywords in the title, then we can omit the website name and brand name. Typically, using an SEO plugin can help us globally control whether to keep or remove the brand name on the webpage, and sometimes Google will automatically append our brand name to our website on the SERP.
Exception: When the brand has high recognition in the market, adding the brand name to the website title can significantly increase the click-through rate.
3. Use Symbols to Save Space
For example, '&' can replace 'and', saving two characters of space. Use a colon (:) or a vertical bar (|) to replace a dash (——————). For instance, in the title of my article, replacing the dash (——————) with a colon (:) can save a bit of pixel space.
Examples of Title Optimization:
Original (with dash):

Optimized (with colon):
Google SEO Title Optimization: How to Write High Click-Through Rate Titles? (Includes Cases)
Pro Tip: You can also use the English colon ':' to replace the Chinese colon ':' to save a bit of pixel space.
4. Creating Title Tags Around Target Keywords
“The title must contain keywords.” The purpose is to let Google know that your page is relevant to what users are searching for. Placing keywords at the beginning (front-loading) can attract searchers' attention and improve visibility, but the main goal is to attract user clicks.
Title Creation Paradigm/Formula:
You can use this paradigm to determine your title:
Identify Main Keywords >> Find Corresponding Long-Tail Keywords >> Add Powerful Emotional Vocabulary >> Highlight Features >> Format Title
Next, we will use this paradigm to practice writing high-CTR SEO titles for different types of pages.
How to Write SEO Titles for Different Types of Pages
How to Write Titles for Affiliate Articles (Applicable to Listicle Pages)
Let's take a sewing machine from a sewing niche I previously worked on as an example.
5-Step Guide:
Determine the main keyword: sewing machine.
Find long-tail keywords for “sewing machine” through keyword research, for example, “sewing machine for quilting” (this is just an example; SEMrush shows a KD of 18, but after checking the SERP, the search difficulty is still relatively high).
Add powerful emotional words. Words like “Fast,” “Easy,” “Ultimate,” “Best” can enhance page titles by evoking emotion and promising valuable content. Here, we'll use “Best.” So, the current page title becomes Best sewing machine for quilting
.
Add words or symbols to highlight what makes your content unique. For example, quantity, year, content depth, etc. Here, we'll choose quantity, so the title becomes 7 best sewing machine for quilting (A buyer's guide)
.
Properly format the title, maintaining consistent style. You can use English title case (capitalize the first letter of main words, lowercase prepositions and conjunctions): 7 Best Sewing Machine for Quilting (A Buyer's Guide)
[473 pixels].
How to Write Titles for Informational Articles
5-Step Process:
Determine the main keyword: “how to thread a sewing machine”
This is already a relatively long-tail keyword, so skip this step.
Powerful vocabulary. It can be changed to “how to thread 'almost any' sewing machine.” “Almost any” means “nearly all.” At this point, it can already be considered an SEO title. If you feel it's not enough, you can continue to optimize.
Highlight features. You can use “Step-by-Step” or “with pictures.” The title then becomes how to thread almost any sewing machine – step-by-step guide
or how to thread a sewing machine (with pictures)
.
Format the title: How to Thread Almost Any Sewing Machine (Step-by-Step Guide)
[577 pixels] OR How to Thread a Sewing Machine (with Pictures)
[433 pixels].
How to Write Titles for Products or Services
E-commerce sites can highlight materials, uses, attributes, models, regions, etc., based on business and product types. Using templates to automatically generate titles can save a lot of time. For example, using structures similar to these:
Title Templates and Examples:
Template 1: [Brand][Model][Product Type]-[Feature]
BLUETTI AC50B Portable Power Station | 700W 448 Wh
This example demonstrates a title for an electronic product, including brand, model, type, features, and specifications.
Template 2: [Product Attribute][Product Name]|[Product Category]
Waterproof Canvas Messenger Bag | Laptop Shoulder Bag
This example shows a title for a bag, highlighting its attributes (waterproof canvas), name (messenger bag), and category (laptop shoulder bag).
Template 3: [Product Service]|[Region]
OEM CNC Machining Service | Custom Parts Manufacturer China
This example illustrates a title for a service, specifying the service type (OEM CNC Machining Service) and location/scope (Custom Parts Manufacturer China).
Pro Tips for Higher CTR:
Depending on the product type, adding product attributes can attract relevant long-tail keyword traffic. Judiciously using numbers, symbols, or brand names, such as 'in 202X'
, '#1 Choice'
, '30% Discount'
, can increase click-through rates.
How to Set Up Titles for a WordPress Website?
Using an SEO plugin is the simplest method. We will take Rank Math, this SEO plugin, as an example.

Method One: Globally Set the Default Title Structure
Here, through Rank Math SEO > Titles & Meta, you can set the title format for various types of pages.
Examples:
Posts:
%title% %sep% %sitename%
Categories:
%term% Archives %sep% %sitename%
Product Pages (WooCommerce):
%title% | Buy Now from %sitename%
Explanation:
%title%
→ Current page title (backend article title)%sep%
→ Separator (usually | or -)%sitename%
→ Site nameMethod Two: Setting Independent Titles for Single Posts or Pages
Navigate to the Rank Math panel at the bottom of the editor > Edit Snippet to set independent titles.
Here we can customize individually:
